How should bottle washer samples and trials be prepared?

A useful bottle-washer trial uses a traceable sample set, controlled operating conditions and an agreed method for deciding whether each bottle passes.

Use the trial to answer a defined purchasing question.

A bottle-washer trial should prove a specific point: whether a machine can handle the intended bottles, remove the defined contamination, achieve the required moisture condition or support the target line arrangement. A trial that starts without a written question can produce attractive photographs without producing a defensible machine decision.

Direct answer: prepare representative clean, typical and worst-case bottles; label every sample group; agree the machine configuration and test method; hold important conditions stable; record every reject and observation; and decide the result against acceptance criteria written before the run.

For food and drink projects, the customer’s own hygiene and product-safety system remains responsible for deciding what evidence is sufficient. The UK Food Standards Agency’s MyHACCP prerequisite guidance is a useful general reference for equipment suitability, cleaning and maintenance, but it does not replace a site-specific validation.

Common trial mistakes

Unmarked mixed samples

When bottles from different labels, residues or storage ages are mixed, the result cannot be traced to the condition that produced it.

Changing several variables together

A clean result may not be reproducible if temperature, chemistry, speed and nozzle position were all changed without a controlled record.

Measuring machine movement instead of conforming output

A line decision should count bottles that meet the acceptance criterion after washing, drainage, inspection and any agreed reject stage.

What makes a bottle sample representative?

A representative bottle sample covers the formats, contamination levels, labels, ages and handling conditions that materially affect the real process. It should include the typical population and the credible extremes, not a random handful of clean bottles.

The sample record should explain why each group was selected and how frequently it is expected in production. If a rare bottle is outside the intended process, classify it as a reject instead of allowing it to define the whole machine.

Should worst-case bottles be included in the trial?

Worst-case bottles should be included when they are genuinely expected and safe to handle, because they define the process boundary. They should not be artificial examples chosen only to make the test fail or unknown hazardous bottles sent without prior agreement.

Identify what makes the bottle worst case—dried residue, narrow neck, old adhesive, unstable base or another factor—and keep it separate from the typical sample group.

What should remain fixed during comparison trials?

Bottle identity, inspection timing, measurement method and all process variables not under investigation should remain as stable as practical during comparison trials. This allows the observed difference to be linked to the variable that was deliberately changed.

If a variable cannot be held fixed, record the deviation and avoid claiming a precise comparison. The test report should make uncertainty visible rather than smoothing it into one pass/fail total.

What evidence should be captured before bottles leave the trial area?

Capture the sample identity, machine settings, operating conditions, before-and-after condition, rejects, photographs, observations and acceptance decision before bottles leave the trial area. Once samples are mixed, dried further, handled or discarded, important evidence may be lost.

Retain agreed reference samples where safe and practical, and make sure photographs include enough context to identify the bottle group and inspected surface.
